Relationship between blood and bronchial submucosal eosinophilia and reticular basement membrane thickening in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

چکیده
A sputum eosinophilia is observed in 10-40% of COPD subjects. The blood eosinophil count is a biomarker of sputum eosinophilia, but whether it is associated with bronchial submucosal eosinophils is unclear. In 20 COPD subjects and 21 controls we assessed the number of bronchial submucosal eosinophils and reticular basement membrane thickening and found these were positively correlated with the blood eosinophil percentage. In COPD, blood eosinophils are a good biomarker of bronchial eosinophilia and remodelling.

Reticular basement membrane in asthma and COPD: Similar thickness, yet different composition
BACKGROUND Reticular basement membrane (RBM) thickening has been variably associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Even if RBM thickness is similar in both diseases, its composition might still differ. OBJECTIVE To assess whether RBM thickness and composition differ between asthma and COPD. METHODS We investigated 24 allergic asthmatics (forced expiratory vol...
متن کاملMast cells in COPD airways: relationship to bronchodilator responsiveness and angiogenesis.
We have investigated whether mast cells are associated with bronchodilator responsiveness and airway vascular changes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) airways. We have previously shown that the reticular basement membrane is hypervascular and the lamina propria is hypovascular in COPD. Bronchial biopsies from 32 COPD subjects, 15 smokers with normal lung function and 17 controls,...
متن کاملOverlap Syndrome in Respiratory Medicine: Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are highly prevalent chronic diseases in the general population. Both are characterized by similar mechanisms: airway inflammation, airway obstruction, and airway hyperresponsiveness. However, the distinction between the two obstructive diseases is not always clear. Multiple epidemiological studies demonstrate that in elderly people with o...
متن کاملVariation in the measurements of basement membrane thickness and inflammatory cell number in bronchial biopsies.
We do not have an estimate of how much tissue is needed for a reliable measure of bronchial epithelial reticular basement membrane (RBM) thickness or for counts of inflammatory cells. An assessment of the frequency distribution and variance of data from repeat measurements of RBM thickness and biopsy section inflammatory cell counts in cases with asthma (n=6), chronic obstructive pulmonary dise...
متن کاملOn the functional consequences of bronchial basement membrane thickening.
Reticular basement membrane (RBM) thickness and airway responses to inhaled methacholine (MCh) were studied in perennial allergic asthma (n = 11), perennial allergic rhinitis (n = 8), seasonal allergic rhinitis (n = 5), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, n = 9). RBM was significantly thicker in asthma (10.1 +/- 3.7 microm) and perennial rhinitis (11.2 +/- 4.2 microm) than in seaso...
